Not much to report, other than an extended wait on wrapping up final items before move in. The biggest of which is a plumbing issue to resolve…turns out that we need a bigger pipe running water into the building. Nice to find that out now, instead of at the start. Anyway, that would should begin in the next day or so and I hope not take too long to complete. After that fix, the final painting and details can be knocked out. So close, but still not home yet.

Matt Decell delivered the desks he made….here’s a pic without their tops. We need to determine the best layout for the desks.

All the lighting is in the house, with just a few final items to install. The bar top should be going back up today or tomorrow as the underlighting will be finished and the onyx insert installed. News signs were also installed in front (above the door).

Other items to complete in the coming week or three…

- Finish design/prints for backlit boards that run along the stairway wall.
- Finish the runway lighting and video monitors that run along an exit corridor.
- Matt Decell to drop off the ping pong table he made (also working as a conference table).
- Finalize a pool table selection (also serves as a conference table).
- Work on set up for all speakers, projectors, screens around the space.
- Final painting/detail.
- Do a massive final clean up.

A few big things being worked on, including a plumbing issues (important) and a the installation of perforated/corrugated metal sheets over the bar and kitchen area (very cool). Here’s the first metal panel installed….

Other than that, lots of smaller items appearing everyday. Lights, bathroom details and employee-of-the-month bicycle parking spots in the entrance lobby.

Today David Boatwright, artist and master muralist, painted an exterior sign for 301 King. We decided to leave the back exterior “as is”…..with layers of paint, old Karesh Men’s Wear sign and graffiti….as a bit of tribute to what’s been there before. The new Blue Ion addition wraps around the corner. Hopefully it will wear as well as the rest of the art.

Also, rope lighting is being installed on top of some of the beams. While it lights the ceiling, you don’t actually see the rope lights until you get up on the Mezz floor. More detail on these lights later, but they are very cool. Flexible, glowing….they look like flowing streams of electrical juice.

Spent hours this weekend building furniture….or more accurately, assembling furniture. While the IKEA stuff looks good and comes at a relative bargain, it does get old piecing this stuff together. I was reminded by a post made on the BI blog a few years back during an IKEA build…the 6 stages of IKEA assembly.

What a way to start the New Year….the heart and soul of the new space appeared yesterday. The team set up the foundation and frame for what is approx an eighteen foot bar (and “work” surface). Some of the old beams were used for the top frame. Good news is that the building team is working away, even if we’re behind in some of our duties (like getting furniture and making some final decisions). But…move in could be a few weeks away.

Here are a few pics of recent progress:

Mezz – ducts are installed and full of air. Fabric duct work is pretty fun.

Lobby – backlit signs….waiting for us to determine what to put in them.

Stairs – handrailing cables are installed.

Have to catch up with all the video being shot at the space. Thanks to Matt C for moving the camera around every once in a while to catch some of the action. I’ve compiled some of the key items that have taken place over the last couple months: LOTS of woodworking.

First:
The main hardwoods in the space. We went with Caribbean Pine throughout the space. A nice, naturally light hardwood. You’ll see some sanding and finishing towards the end of this video.

Second:
Back Conference Room space (flex) or what we like to more appropriately call: The Game Room. We went with the same species of hardwoods in there.

Third:
For the Mezzanine Stairs we used reclaimed wood from the LARGE OLD wood beams (you see in the background). These were milled and laid as treads on the steel frame.

Fourth:
The stage has been set! This stage is build from a different species of hardwood, finished and stained dark to help match the dark woods in the mahogany bar cabinetry (out of frame), the dark old beams of the mezzanine (and the reclaimed wood on the stairs). We also are using that reclaimed wood for “moveable” steps to get up onto the stage (not seen).

Lastly:
Ahh, relaxing on the outside deck will be nice. You can now see how the Mezzanine is separated by the large glass windows/sliding doors, then flows out onto the rooftop deck. The deck is palletized so that each section can be pulled up if it ever needs replacing or repairs, as well as maintaining the roof itself. It’s IPE wood materials going into the deck. Also we came up with a seating area that covers up a “natural bench” that was there as part of the building and ductwork.

More to come, when we get the ceiling treatments in the main space done, as well as the bar completed in the space.

Here's a short list of things checked off the "to do" list...

We’ve been slow on the updates as of late….busy cranking out some sites and other virtual world projects. But thanks to Seamar, KHA and crew, things are progressing nicely. We may be 3-4 weeks away from move in….but who’s counting weeks?

Here’s a short list of things checked off the “to do” list…

Main Floors – with two more coats of poly, the floors will be done. The wood was left in its natural color, and it looks great. Here’s a shot of the upstairs lobby area…

Stage/Mezzanine Floors – The stage was stained a bit darker to contrast with the main floors..and to match some darker wood that’s used in the bar/kitchen cabinets. The stage now flows to the stairs (also a darker wood that came from the old beams in the space) that go up to the mezzanine (new wood, similar to the main floors). Here’s a shot of that stage flooring…

Outdoor Patio/Deck – It’s all done, and may be the best feature in the space. I think we’ll be spending some quality time out there.

Bathrooms – The giant communal sink is in (the stand/cabinet that supports it was also milled from re-used, old beams from the space), and the bathrooms are getting closer with tiling and toilets in. It feels a bit spa like in there.

HVAC Ducts – We chose to go with fabric/soft duct for a number of reasons (less material used, more flexibility, cost savings, etc.) and they started appearing this weekend. Right below is a shot of the duct work in the back area…it looks pretty cool. Like the tail end of an airplane. When pumping air they fill up like a jump castle.

Other – Railings are going in, lighting is being prepped, the painters are gearing up for final coats and we have final designs for the long bar and kitchen area ceiling treatment. Wait until you see that….should be interesting.

Now we need to get down to business and start thinking about furniture, or we’ll be working on the floor while sitting on pillows.

Much to report, and getting very close to the wrap. Well, closer. Still some items on the to-do list but we can now see the light at the end of the hallway. Here are some things taking shape:

Communal sink and stand – They did a great job on the cabinet/stand for the giant sink. Looking nice. Some hardware, a few river rocks, and we can wash our hands…

Bar & Kitchen – Matt Decell and crew have most of the main elements are roughed in. Still to come is the large “cover” and the long bar that extends from the wet bar….

Colors – Most of the walls that are going to be painted are painted. Orange, green, charcoal, blue and grey are the picks….

Mezz – They final were able to pull away the platform wood and drip cloths from the beams…so you can see from the work area up and out to the patio deck….
